Minimal Restoration

There are stands that contain both high numbers of yellow pines and numerous concentrations of thick "dog-hair" groups of trees, but are located within a very important wildlife travel corridor situated between developments on private land. Noting that the yellow pine (old growth ponderosa pine) are dying at high rates due to the competitive forces from dense, younger trees, and that yellow pine are invaluable, the minimal restoration prescription seeks to invigorate old growth while providing wildlife cover/travelway. Minimal restoration will hand thin small trees (less than 9 inches dbh) around the more robust yellow pine groups, while retaining significant stringers of dense, young trees. This thinning will reduce the competitive forces and slightly lessen the risk of stand replacement wildfire. The thinning will be followed by a prescribed burn.
