Presettlement
Model With 20% Deferral

This variation
on the presettlement model provides for wildlife cover
and travel corridors. Approximately 20% of each unit
is unthinned (but prescribed burned) in patches of the
more dense forest that is currently existing. Interspersed
in these unthinned patches are treated areas thinned
according to the presettlement model that result in
"fire breaks". Therefore, this model results in a mosaic
of small (generally from 5-25 acres) areas of restoration
thinning on 80% of the unit, while the other 20% is
retained in dense forest patches for wildlife cover
and travel. Both the thinned and unthinned areas are
followed with a prescribed fire.
