Restoration Approaches Study Block

This is a research block to compare and contrast four approaches to restoring ponderosa pine. When completed, these units can be viewed side by side for quick visual comparison. In a scientific manner, the four treatments will be compared using approximately 25 permanent plots each that capture a host of tree, soil, small mammal, and understory data.

The treatments (and one control unit) are: presettlement model, uneven-age model, Forests Forever (Southwest Forest Alliance approach), and a blend model to be determined that will capture the best of all three models. Each unit is approximately 100 acres, with unthinned wildlife corridors traversing them. Research plots are consistent with plots on other projects (Mount Trumbull, Grand Canyon, Camp Navajo, Frenchy) studying restoration. Each of the thinning treatments are followed by a prescribed (broadcast) burn.
