Field Accomplishments of the
Grand Canyon Forests Partnership: A Monitoring Report
September 20, 2001

Charts | Tables

The Grand Canyon Forests Partnership was formed in 1996. Data collection and project planning for the Partnership began in 1998; project work began in November 1998. Due to administrative appeals and litigation, the Partnership was delayed in implementing ecological restoration work on one of its major projects from May 5, 1999 to January 3, 2001.

In addition to the following accomplishments on the ground, the Partnership has numerous research, monitoring, educational, and small business stimulation efforts ongoing.

Five environmental analyses reports have been completed: Fort Valley Demo, Fort Valley Ecosystem Restoration Project, Elden, Arboretum, and Airport. Environmental analyses completed or to be completed by spring 2002 (but not yet implemented on the ground) represent approximately 11,000 acres of additional potential ecological restoration treatment.

Thinning treatments consist of 11 different prescriptions (less than half with the "presettlement" model); 25% without heavy equipment and without the sale of timber; and 24% with a 12 inch or less diameter limit (80% of the area with a 16 inch or less diameter limit).

Highlights Include:

Completed Work-

  • Completed thinning and initial burning treatments on 334 acres.
  • Completed thinning treatments on an additional 516 acres.
  • Closure of 1.0 mile of roads within Chimney Springs meadow.
  • Obliteration of 2.8 additional miles of unneeded roads.
  • Restoration of stream flow channel at Chimney Springs.
  • Prescribed fire on 39 additional acres.
  • Restoration of Chimney Springs meadow.
  • Rehabilitation of Chimney Springs.

Pending Work- (Within 1 month)

  • Thinning contracts for an additional 1,043 acres of thinning.
  • Designation of camping activities along Freidlein Prairie Road.

Projects accomplished on the ground as of July 2001, currently under contract, or within three months of being under contract are listed in the following narratives and displayed in the following charts and tables.

Hand Thin = in acres; crews with chainsaws; stack wood and tops for burning and/or firewood use.
Mechanical Thin = in acres; heavy equipment; hand falling or mechanical cutting/delimbing; whole tree yarding or forwarding from woods.
Fire Thin = in acres; thinning with fire only without any hand or mechanical thinning.
DBH Limit = in inches; largest diameter tree cut.
Slash Trt = removal of thinning/treatment slash by burning piles of slash or removal by firewood gatherers.
Bburn = broadcast burn following slash treatment; prescribed fire to restore low intensity ground fire to site.
Nw Tmp Rd = miles of temporary road built for thinning activity.
Clsd Tmp = miles of temporary (new or existing nonsystem road) closed by project.
Clsd Oth = miles of unnecessary system roads closed (per EA).
